What your signage supplier actually needs from you — and why a photo is worth more than a specification

The most common reason a signage project takes longer than it should, costs more than it needs to, or produces a result that requires amends is a brief that left too much open to interpretation. This is not a criticism of clients — most people commission signage infrequently and have no reason to know what information is most useful to a sign company. But understanding a few basics makes the whole process significantly faster and more likely to produce the right result first time.

Context matters more than technical detail

The information that matters most to a sign company at the start of a project is not technical. It is contextual. Where is the sign going — indoors or outdoors, on a wall or a window or a vehicle, in a high-footfall area or a restricted access environment? How far away will people be reading it from — two metres or twenty? What is it meant to communicate — the brand, a message, a direction, a price? And what is the deadline?

We’ll work out the rest

From the answers to these questions, a good sign company can advise on everything else — the appropriate material, the suitable fixing method, the minimum text size, the artwork specification.

Just describe what you want

The client does not need to know any of these things in advance. They just need to describe the situation they are in and the outcome they want.

A photo says more than paragraphs

The single most useful thing a client can provide alongside a verbal brief is a photograph of the location. A photograph of the wall, window, vehicle or outdoor space shows the sign company the scale, the context, the existing colours and any constraints or opportunities that would take several paragraphs to describe in words.

We work with clients at every stage of brief clarity. If you have a signage project in mind but are not sure how to describe it, call us and we will ask the questions that turn a vague idea into a precise brief.
